Benefit Analysis of Using Heat Tracing

Self-regulating electric heat tracing adjusts its heat output based on the temperature of the sensitive pipe wall (medium), making it an energy-saving measure. The most widely used self-regulating electric heat tracing cable consumes 15W per meter. For a pipeline length of 1000m, the hourly power consumption is 1000×15/1000=15KW.h. When the pipeline temperature reaches the upper maintenance limit, the heat output of the tracing gradually decreases, and the power output also drops accordingly. Thus, the actual power consumption of the heat tracing is generally 60% of the rated power. With an industrial electricity price of 0.60 yuan/KW.h and an operating period of 100 days (2400 hours), the annual normal electricity cost is: (15×2400)×0.60×60%=12960 yuan. When used with a temperature controller, self-regulating electric heat tracing can not only precisely maintain the medium temperature of the pipeline or heating body but also significantly reduce operating costs.
Constant wattage electric heat tracing has a constant heat output per unit length; the longer the cable used, the greater the total output power. The most widely used constant wattage electric heat tracing cable consumes 20W per meter. For a pipeline length of 1000m, the hourly power consumption is 1000×20/1000=20KW.h. When the pipeline temperature reaches the upper maintenance limit, the output power stabilizes, and the power consumption remains constant. With an industrial electricity price of 0.60 yuan/KW.h and an operating period of 100 days (2400 hours), the annual normal electricity cost is: (20×2400)×0.60=28800 yuan. When used with a temperature controller, constant wattage electric heat tracing can also precisely maintain the medium temperature of the pipeline or heating body.

Service Life of Electric Heat Tracing

With proper maintenance, the service life of an electric heat tracing system is 8 years or more.

Application Scope of Electric Heat Tracing Products

Electric heat tracing products are widely used for heat tracing, insulation, freeze protection, and condensation prevention of pipelines, pumps, valves, tanks, and vessels in industries such as petroleum, chemical, electric power, pharmaceuticals, machinery, food, and shipping. They are the most advanced and effective method for maintaining process temperature in liquid pipelines and storage tanks. Electric heat tracing is not only suitable for all steam tracing applications but also solves problems that steam tracing cannot easily address, such as heat tracing of long-distance pipelines, heat tracing in narrow spaces, heat tracing of irregularly shaped equipment (e.g., pumps), heat tracing of pipelines and equipment without steam sources or in remote areas, and heat tracing of plastic and non-metallic pipelines.

Classification of Common Electric Heat Tracing

Common electric heat tracing can be classified into the following types based on different pipelines (tanks):
1. Self-regulating (self-controlling) electric heat tracing cable: This cable has a resistance that increases with temperature, reducing power output. Due to its high startup current, the typical length used is no more than 100 meters. The cable can be cut to any length, and regardless of length, it will generate heat when connected to the rated voltage.
2. Parallel electric heat tracing cable: This cable uses two (or three) parallel insulated copper stranded wires as power busbars. A PTC heating wire is wound around a skeleton, and at each heating section, it alternately connects to the busbars, forming a continuous parallel resistance. The typical length of this cable is 10-800 meters.
3. Series electric heat tracing cable: This cable uses three parallel insulated copper stranded wires of the same cross-section and a certain length as power busbars and heating cores. One end is reliably short-circuited, and the other end is connected to a 380V (or designed voltage) power supply, forming a star load. According to Joule-Lenz law: Q=0.24IRT, electrical energy is converted into heat, and the star load continuously releases heat, forming a continuous, uniformly heating electric heat tracing cable. Depending on actual needs, the three phases (or single phase) of the cable can be separated (split type) or integrated. This cable cannot be too short; the typical length is 500-2500 meters.
4. High-temperature electric heat tracing cable: This cable is made of fiberglass or other high-temperature resistant materials, with a temperature resistance of up to 300°C. The length ranges from 1 to 50 meters (since it cannot be cut arbitrarily, professional design by the manufacturer is required).
5. Silicone rubber electric heat tracing cable: This cable can be used for heating, heat tracing, and insulation of industrial equipment or laboratory pipe boxes, tanks, and oil drums in humid, non-explosive environments. The cable length is 1-15 meters (since it cannot be cut arbitrarily, professional design by the manufacturer is required).
6. MI cable: This cable consists of a metal core (heating element) tightly surrounded by mineral magnesium oxide (insulation layer) and a metal sheath (usually copper, steel, or stainless steel) that has been drawn multiple times. The continuous working temperature can reach 250-590°C, and the short-term working temperature can reach 1083°C. The length is 18-680 meters (since it cannot be cut arbitrarily, professional design by the manufacturer is required).
